Elizabethan Floral Scrolls - Option 1

embroidery, elizabethan floral, floral embroideryThis is a typical Elizabethan design featuring coiling stems of gold, enclosing flowers, insects and small creatures stitched in Gumnut Yarn “stars” silks on a linen background. This project allows students to build on their embroidery techniques and skills.

The piece for this class is a standalone piece and can be framed or mounted on the lid of a box OR the piece can be put towards an embroidered Elizabethan casket which is to be done over a three year period. This piece has been designed to be used for the side panels on the casket. The design measures 13.5cm x 15.5cm.

This workshop will be based on the landscape of and around Mount Augustus. This work involves the processes of design, construction and stitching of a low relief panel. The techniques include layered backgrounds and layered stitching techniques. The piece designed for the workshop will have opportunities for change and self-expression by the students.
Simple Stitches give complex results: you will bring your landscape to life using the exciting mediums of fabric, thread and stitch. Your results will be beautiful.

Carousel Leaf of the Month

A beautiful rondel with 24 leaves filled with an exciting selection of stitches*. Students will be provided with the fabric and backing material, with the pattern already traced. It will be a good opportunity to use threads from your stash. Tania will advise and help students choose threads and colours and will also provide some of the fibres, metallic threads and wires.

Each month students will stitch two leaves with a total of six different techniques.

* This design is being used with the kind permission of Diana van der Walt, owner of Spinnerin, South Africa.

Pashtun Purse

The Pashtun people of Afghanistan work Pashtun embroidery. Students attending the workshop will make a small purse (approximately 11cm square when folded up) using the traditional metal thread couching style of this type of embroidery. Alison provides a kit containing the prepared metal threads and mirrors used for the embroidery. Students do not need experience of metal thread embroidery for this workshop, which is suitable for all levels of embroiderer.

There will be some preparation needed prior to the course and this will be sent out in good time before the workshop. Please enrol early.

Samite Spot Sampler

The sampler is a spot-style embroidery based on 4th, 5th and 6th Century Counted Embroidery from Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan. It is worked on 30-count natural even-weave linen and the motifs use a number of different counted thread techniques in both orthodox and unorthodox methods. The size of the completed embroidery is approximately 21cm x 21cm. Students need some experience of counted thread embroidery on linen for this workshop.

You will need to provide 40cm x 40cm, 30 count even-weave linen and Gumnut “bud” threads which will be included in the requirements list. (Five full skeins and five that can be shared.)

There is some preparation to be done before the workshop and details will be sent out in good time prior to the workshop. Please enrol early.

Hussif using Linen Stitches

Using an interesting range of counted thread stitches in both usual and unusual structures, students will stitch a cylindrical hussif on 25-count unbleached linen (provided with the workshop folio) using one variegated silk thread and several stranded cottons. The hussif is 12cm x 5cm in size and is trimmed with a handmade button and buttonhole loop. This class is lots of fun, not a lot of work and very rewarding to stitch! This class is an intermediate level and students should have some experience of counted thread embroidery on linen fabric.

 

Kit Cost

Chinese Embroidery

This design of a lotus bud is an ideal ‘taste of’ project in the ‘Su’ style of traditional Chinese Art Embroidery. In this class, participants will learn to embroider with filament silk and the techniques to achieving beautiful silk shading in the Chinese tradition. For continuing students or those wishing to commence the formal program, Margaret will work with you on your individual project level. If you are moving to the next level or have completed your current project please advise the Guild and Margaret will contact you to discuss your options and choices.

A framing session will be held on Tuesday afternoon 1 May. The exact time will be included on the Requirements List. It is important to attend this so that class time can be devoted to embroidery.

Japanese Bead Embroidery - Option 2

Rainbow Purse

This option is only for those who have done a previous beading class with Margaret.

It includes more advanced techniques focusing on design and colour play. Knowledge of the fundamentals of Japanese bead embroidery will be assumed for those undertaking this project.
The sample project is an evening purse. Participants may also convert this to other project styles (e.g. eyeglass case or box top) You will be guided on how to adapt this design to other projects in class.

For continuing students who have done previous work with Margaret and who wish to progress to more challenging levels, please advise the Guild and Margaret will contact you to discuss your options and choices.

Creative Design

The Design workshop is aimed at assisting embroiderers and textile artists to develop their own original designs and is based on discussion and activities to explore the elements and principles of design.
The design technique activities can be learned and practiced and will allow participants to gain confidence and apply their own personal design ideas to produce original, individual pieces which are balanced, pleasing and exciting. The course comprises 4 one-day workshops (9.30am to 4.00pm) with time in between to allow participants to absorb the information and complete the “homework”. Comprehensive notes are given. Day 1 (June 17) covers Line and Shape; Day 2 (July 15) Colour; Day 3 (August 26) Composition and Design Processes; Day 4 (September 23) Application of design to embroidery.
