Patty’s Plum is a beautiful poppy which lends itself to interpretation in mixed media. Begin with a coloured background: photo transfer or sketch and paint. Decide if you would like to use wet felting for the poppy bloom OR double-sided appliqué with a raw edge. The poppy bloom is made independently. Before attaching the bloom enjoy embroidering into the background with simple traditional leaf stitches, ribbon embroidery, painted cocoons and free-form mulberry bark leaves. The centre of the bloom is urchin stitch as well as beaded urchin stitch. This is worked into the centre of the bloom before it is attached to the background. Position the bloom onto the background and attach it with a few simple stab stitches. The stem is needle felting attached with reversed buttonhole. Free form crinkled chiffon and chenille is the final embellishment for shadows on the petals. The finished embroidery is approximately 23cm x 22cm, background fabric size 35cm x 30cm
